The aim of this tutorial is to give those who are new to remote sensing data an introduction to what the data can be used for, and how these processes are done.

The tutorial is adapted from practicals produced for undergraduates at Stirling University by Dr. Sandy Winterbottom, and takes the form of four sections, each dedicated to a different technique. Within each section there is an introduction, describing the aim of the section, some exercises, and a summary of what the section covered. The exercises are sets of instructions of how to manipulate remote sensing data, to perform some of the most useful tasks that people make use of the data for today. The detailed descriptions of how to manipulate the data assume that you have the software Erdas Imagine installed on your computer. The instructions were written for version 8.5, so those using other versions may find they need to do things slightly differently. Help can be found in the Erdas Imagine help menu. If you do not have a copy of Erdas Imagine, it is still useful to take a look through the tutorial, to get an idea of what it is possible to achieve with remote sensing data. There are links at the start of each section of the tutoral, where the data needed for that section can be downloaded. For section 2 you will also need the Ordnance Survey 1:25000 map sheet (NS89/99) of the Hillfoots area.
